Dr. Jenay Garrett, LPC

Dr. Jenay Garrett is a Licensed Clinical Supervisor in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and a Certified EMDR therapist with over 15 years of experience in the human services and mental health fields. Her diverse background includes working in various settings such as shelters, non-profit organizations, public schools, in-patient facilities, and community and outpatient therapeutic services. Dr. Garrett has a wealth of experience supporting children, adolescents, adults, couples, groups, and families with a range of mental health challenges. She specializes in trauma/PTSD, suicidal ideation, anxiety, depression, and race and social injustice issues. Her therapeutic approach is integrative, employing Trauma-Informed Care, EMDR, Parts of Self, play therapy, Dreamwork, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Feminist Theory to facilitate healing and growth. Her research focuses on the reintegration experiences of parents and guardians of African American teenage girls returning home from juvenile detention.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Garrett is deeply committed to advocacy and education. She is an advocate for equity and justice, providing training for organizations on topics such as working with clients of color, intergenerational trauma, conflict resolution, communication, and workplace culture. Passionate about breaking the stigma around mental health in minority communities, Dr. Garrett founded the “Swerve the Stigma Project” in July 2018; which is dedicated to highlighting the mental health stories of brave Black and Brown individuals. Dr. Garrett believes that her purpose in life is to empower individuals with the tools needed to navigate life's challenges by leveraging her professional expertise, educational background, and commitment to service to create a non-judgmental space for exploration, support, and growth.
